Platter of compassion is a non-profit making NGO that serves as the national Food Bank in Kenya, with a plan to penetrate all the 47 counties over a period of five years. The organization is registered with the NGOs board under certificate No:218/051/16-169/1046. The goal of Platter of Compassion is to alleviate hunger while at the same time empowering the target communities to generate incomes for self-sustainability through collecting, purchasing, growing and packaging food for distribution through a network of service agencies and programs that serve our target population groups. Our services include school feeding programs, emergency feeding programs, and a variety of opportunities for self-sufficiency activities for vulnerable groups. Platter of Compassion receives support from the counties, government departments, charitable organizations ,individuals and corporate sponsorship.
A substantial number of people residing in informal settlements and street families without access to any form of meaningful livelihood qualify for assistance from Platter of Compassion. Our target groups consist of very low-income or no income people, mainly families, who need emergency help to put food on the table. The school feeding program is critical as the schools targeted attract children from very poor backgrounds. Nearly half of those served by the program are school children who go to school hungry and mostly have no hope of getting a decent meal either at home or at school. Without this support many will opt to go to the street rather than go to school.
Platter of Compassion operates a warehouse facility where we store donated or rescued food for distribution. The program actively solicits food and other crucial resources from local food growers, retailers, wholesalers, and processors. In addition, Platter of Compassion collects food donations from restaurants for immediate distribution to highly exposed groups.
It is estimated that the number of families, most of which are made up of hapless single mothers who need services from Platter of Compassion will increase during the next five years. The various counties, which include Nairobi, Kajiado and Machakos are having growing needs and a number of new families are entering the areas, particularly Nairobi to look for employment. A number of programs exist to help transition these new families into the county. Platter of Compassion is an important resource to these programs because we can respond quickly with the one of the most important resources these families need. Food!
Our services improve the ability of families to care for children and achieve goals of self-sufficiency. Platter of Compassion's services, now, are a small investment in comparison to cost of ignoring the problem of hunger in the counties and the influence it has on a number of health and crime issues.
